English as a Second Language (ESL)

Burnaby has more than 20 years of experience in providing intensive English language training. This has allowed the district to develop an exceptional program led by highly qualified teachers.

Most international students require English language training, which is referred to as the English as Second Language (ESL) Program. A student’s English level is assessed during orientation.

Elementary school students are integrated into a regular classroom but removed from class for up to 1 hour a day to receive specialized ESL instruction. The amount of time out of the regular classroom is reduced as the student’s English improves throughout the year.

Secondary school students complete ESL courses as well as regular academic courses suitable for their English language level. Basically, each Burnaby secondary school offers three levels of ESL program, beginner, intermediate and advanced. Depending on their language level, secondary students normally receive from 3 to 12 hours of intensive English language training each week.
