Fall & Winter in Burnaby

Fall and Winter can be very busy with so much happening at school and lots of fun activities to do. In this article, we’ll give you all the information you need to stay organized and have a fun end to the year!

Important School Information

There are lots of national holidays around this time of year in Canada.

Thanksgiving falls on Monday the 14th of October this year in Canada. Thanksgiving is a great time to get together with loved ones and spend some quality time together, and of course, enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner!

Remembrance Day falls on Monday the 11th of November. Remembrance Day honours those who died in armed conflicts from World War I onwards. You’ll see lots of people showing their support by wearing a pin of a small red poppy.

Christmas Break starts on the 21st of December and ends on the 6th of January 2020 as students and teachers return to class. This is a great opportunity to spend some time with friends or to explore more of what Burnaby and BC has to offer!

Semester 1 ends on the 17th of January 2020, with Semester 2 starting on the 27th of January 2020. Orientation will take place from the 20th to the 24th of January 2020.

Things To Do in Winter & Fall

Thankfully, there’s a wide range of fun things to do in Burnaby in winter and fall. Our Winters here aren’t as harsh as other places in Canada, which means we still get to spend a lot of time outdoors!

Hiking

That’s right! You can hike all winter long in Burnaby. Because of our location, it rarely snows here, meaning we have hiking trails open year-round. Burnaby Mountain is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the Lower Mainland. There are 26 multi-use trails on Burnaby Mountain with 28km of trails open all winter long.

Skiing

Burnaby is uniquely placed. We have mild winters, but we can easily get to a number of ski hills and resorts. The best of both worlds! North Vancouver has three resorts for you to choose from; Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain and Mount Seymour. Day passes are available for these ski hills.

The world-famous ski resort Whistler Blackcomb is only a two-hour drive north on the scenic Sea to Sky Highway. There are regular buses running between Whistler and Vancouver, making day trips very convenient.

Skating

We can’t think of many activities that are more Canadian than ice skating. Immerse yourself in Canadian culture by learning how to skate this winter. We have three ice rinks here in Burnaby with a number of lessons also available. In the central valley, you can skate at Bill Copeland Sports Centre and Burnaby Lake Arena, with the Kensington Complex servicing people in north Burnaby.

Events

Burnaby Village Museum turns into a Haunted Village for Halloween. From October 25th to 28th you can visit the spooky village. Expect to see some scary ghosts, eerie moons and giant pumpkins. There’ll also be some entertainment on every night as well as some carousel rides!

Fall Events

There’s no better way to get into the Christmas spirit here in Burnaby than going to the Heritage Christmas event in Burnaby Village Museum. This event runs from November 23rd through to January 3rd. It’s a great place to spend a day of your Christmas vacation! The village will be decked out in Christmas lights and will have lots of fun things to do.
